Hi when i browse the net i get highlighted words on the web pages that reveal ads when i mouse over them. I assume it is some form of adware how do i get rid of this.

Are you using any kind of adblocker? What browser are you using? You are probably seeing are Google AdSense text adds that are embeded into pages. You can find more information by Google. This article is more geared for Microsoft users but it may give you some insight.

That's wholly unnecessary as this is not happening on the local Mac..

A LOT of sites do this sort of advertising, it isn't necessarily running on your machine..depending on your browser, you can run various ad blocking and other extensions to prevent that from happening..

There's nothing to be afraid of here..
