mail icon missing on desk top

When ever i shutdown my laptop and restart my internet mail icon is missing from info bar at bottom of screen,i then have to go to Aplications and double click on mail and it then appears back on desk top,then i always am prompted to enter password before can open email again.
Have no idea why this happened ,unless i deleted something by mistake?

Either drag the icon to the dock or else: open, right click on dock icon, hover over Options and then click Keep in Dock.

As for the password, have you been ticking the "Store Password in Keychain"?
