App on home screen

Hi all,

I'm new to iOS development and currently trying to learn it. During my journey I was wondering if it's possible for a 3rd party app to run on the home screen. By that I mean for example an animation running on top of the home screen where you can still see the home screen icons behind it (transparent background?). It seems like it's pretty much locked down by Apple so I don't expect this to be possible, but I just want to be sure.

It's locked down unless you're dealing with access to the system via a jailbroken device.

Yeah I was afraid so. One more question; is it also impossible to add a custom home screen, kinda similar to how Spotlight works on the iPhone?
