OS9 transfer rates with OSX server

I have a Mac G4 800 Mhz Quicksilver model with OS 9.2.2 and OS 10.3.9. We work from a Mac server running OS 10.2 server software thru an ethernet LAN. My problem is that since upgrading the G4 to OS 10.3 (we were at 10.2) our transfer rates with the server, from OS 9 , are no better than 1 MB per minute. While in OS 10 they seem good.
What setting in OS 9 am I missing?
