Soft ambiant static

I can hear very soft ambiant static in my head phones for about 20 seconds and then it goes away. It just clicks off if no sound is coming out of the computer.

If i get a notification or something and a noise goes off, the static starst up again. Its very soft.

Could be a sound driver problem. Have you tried reinstalling Snow Leopard?
