MBP 2.33ghz 2 Gb RAM 160GB 17" Glossy...
confused on what it is? I have read that it is a code that is attached to a particular hardware device. What I am confused about is can a device be identified by a mac address like my computer for instance?

Yes - a MAC address is encoded in the network interface hardware - and yes - it can identify a device - although it's possible for a device to have more than one MAC address.
