Hello all, I need some advice. I get the grey screen on startup and don't know how to get beyond this. My optical drive is gone so I'm unable to fix the problem using startup disk.. I think I need to find a way into 'safe mode' but how do I do this on 10.4.1? None of the emergency keyboard tips have helped. The problem first arose when everything crashed and I was forced to switch off at the mains.

Safe mode is not going to help if the hard drive is defective. You can use an external optical drive to boot with provided it's firewire capable. Then you can test the hard drive to see if it's defective or just needs repairs.
