Sorry if this post should be placed somewhere else or if the answer has already been posted a bunch of times on threads I'm not finding with my search. . . just joined the forum and don't want to be "that guy". . .
So I'm about to pull the trigger on a new iMac 27. I'm thinking a beast of a computer like this going to need all the memory I can give it so I'm wanting to upgrade to at least 8-12 gigs and see how it runs. Obviously Apple would love for me to go ahead and have them install is for the low-low price of $200-$600. I've never installed a RAM on a Mac (this will be my first) but I've installed plenty in PCs. Is there any reason not to go with a set of dimms from Crucial or Kensington in terms of performance? 8GB of memory can be had from Crucial for $45. And I've heard there's 4 slot in the iMac 27, so I'd end up with 2x2 + 2x4 = 12 for about $50. Would that be a tremendous mistake? Am I fooling myself to think I'd be able to install these myself?
Thanks in advance for your help everyone. Like I said, this will be my first Mac, and I'm really looking forward to learning how to get the most out of it on this forum!
