• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

Is it possible to take an .fcp file and all it's date with me to another computer...and finish editing from there?

Other than saving all of the video clips you're using to an external HD along with the Final Cut file....No.

The only way to include video in a FC file is File>Export>QuicktimeMovie>MakeSelfContained. But this is not editable.

Get a nice External HD, copy your saved Final Cut Project along with these files: Users>YOU>Documents>FinalCutDocs>CaptureScratch to that External and take them with you to the other computer. When you open up the project it will probably say that all the video files went "offline" and you'll have to go in and reconnect everyone of them and it will suck. But if you really need to get some editing done, this should work. Good luck.

If he gets an external drive, wouldn't setting the external drive as the scratch drive in Final Cut work?

Otherwise, the procedure above is correct for transferring currently existing projects. You could also burn DVDs of the files too.

Yep, that would work, you wouldn't have to drag the files onto the new Harddrive.
