iMac Memory Upgrade?

My new iMac came with 4GB of memory in two 2GB sticks.. If I decide to upgrade myself and add two 4GB sticks, I will have a total of 12GB. Will this work? Or do I need to upgrade to 16GB?

Way... way too many specs to list.
I'm running 12GB in my iMac, the 2 2GB sticks, and 2 4GB sticks that came out of my macbook pro. It'll work.
