Hi there,

I think I've made a big mistake.

My iMac wasn't booting and so I ran the os x disk and restored from Time Machine BUT I restored it from my MacBook time machine file as alas, I don't have the iMac back up anymore.

The mac obviously didn't like this and now won't start and goes to grey screen (loading wheel).

I can't start in safe mode, I can start in single user mode.

I have gone into disk utility and verified the disk (which was not happy) and repaired it.

Still no joy.

Any help much appreciated!

If you " ran the OS X Disk " the run it again and install the OS from the installation disks.

You can try, once you have installed the OS, right click on the Time Machine icon on the dock and use " Browse Other Time Machine Disk ".

Thanks for that McBie.

Unfortunately I've tried this and I get the message:

"Mac OS X can't be installed on this computer."

Disc is OS X 10.6.1

Cheers,

Don't understand mate, as in the first post you said you could load the OS and you restored the wrong backup.
Are you using the original OS X disks that came with your iMac ?

Unfortunately I'm not sure if it's the right disk as it's an office computer and here before me!

I'm booting up on the os x disk (so I can access disk utility etc) but I can't get through the install (after language selection I get the error message)

I'll try with some of the old disks knocking around.

If the disks you have are Grey, then they are machine specific ... just saying.
Why not ask the IT guys in your office to fix the problem.... seems strange that an end-user needs to re-install his own machine. Looks like the " Hobby Computer Club " :)

our company is two people me and one person less computer literate (if possible)!

Trying another disk now and seems to be installing okay so far.

Note to anyone reading this with multiple macs - write the computer name/make on the disk!

Good to hear you're making progress ... fingers crossed.
Let us know how you get on and feel free to ask away.
