Have a late 2011 i7 2.2 MacBook Pro 15 in. Find that Safari tends freeze up while I am also doing downloads, have pretty good Comcast bandwidth. Am wondering whether upgrading RAM would help the situation. The recommend is up to 8 GB but have also read that you can upgrade to 16 GB. Any comments?

I would get 8Gb if you can. But that shouldnt really improve your internet browsing.

Go into your settings and change your DNS. Click the + and add some there.
8.8.8.8
0.0.0.0 are good ones and you can search the forums for others as well.

That should speed up your internet.
8Gb is always good to have and 16 if you can afford it ;)

Or try using a different browser.

Way... way too many specs to list.
I wouldn't do 0.0.0.0 (it's not a valid IP btw, it's effectively 'null'.)

Googles public DNS servers (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) however, do work quite well.

You may want to give Chrome/FireFox a shot and see if the issue is with Safari or something else..
