startup troubleshooting

hi all. i cannot start my macbook 10.6.8 anymore. in dvd install disk repair says i need to reformat disk. and i will...
but i need to get back in one last time to run a time machine backup.
i also get a grey progress bar at the bottom when starting up, before the screen turns black and shuts down.
cannot boot in safe mode, verbose, etc.

nothing works except dvd installer

G'day and welcome to the forums,.

Sounds like it is too late to make that backup. See what Repair Disk has to say as it sounds like your HDD has failed. If the drive will repair great. Repairing will not normally erase anything.

forgot to mention...
disk repair won't repair...
