Any idea why the items checked in "Finder Preferences" don't show up in my side bar?

Which items are checked that you're not seeing? Some items won't show up unless necessary. For instance, while "External discs" may be checked, you won't see anything in the sidebar unless something is plugged in.

If that ^ fails, you could replace your Finder.plist file with a fresh default, in case it is corrupt.

Go to
Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences
This might be hidden if you have Lion. I don't, so I don't remember the trick I've read to expose it.

find the file
com.apple.finder.plist

move that to your Desktop and Restart the computer
a new plist file will be created, reset to default

Hold down Option while in the Go menu.
