That looks like the LCD panel itself has cracked. I'd recommend taking it to whomever you bought it from because that shouldn't be there on a new laptop.

This can also happen if things (like books in a backpack) are stored on top of the folded laptop.

x2. I saw this exact thing on a MB that someone had in a backpack along with about 40 pounds of textbooks. It was bounced around quite a bit on a daily basis. The Genius at Apple said it was compression damage.
