Mac Book Pro not working with an external monitor

I just purchased a Samsung Sync master 27 inch monitor. After hooking it up all I can get on the monitor is the default screen but no applications show up. The monitor drivers are all for Windows. What gives??

I think you have Extended Desktop enabled. This allows you to drag a window from your MacBook Pro screen to the external monitor. If you just want to mirror what on your screen, go to the Displays menu in the menu bar or in System Preferences and click on "Turn Video Mirroring On."
