Hey folks,

I've got my external hard drive plugged into the MacBook Pro constantly, which is fine for at-home usage, I suppose. Problem is that work requires me to travel from time to time, resulting in me losing access to a lot of the media stored on my 1.5TB Western Digital MyBook.

Is it possible to perform some computer surgery and put that hard drive directly into the MacBook Pro?

If it helps, I have the late 2011 MBP.

Cheers,
Angel

If the WD MyBook you have uses a 3.5" drive (and I do believe it does), then no.

That drive will not fit in your MBP. You need a drive that is SATA, 2.5" wide and no more than 9.5 MM thick. That limits you to a number of 750 GB drives and several newer 1 TB drives. Check with Other World Computing on line.

It's this one, specifically: Amazon.com: Western Digital My Book Essential 2 TB USB 3.0/2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive WDBACW0020HBK-NESN: Electronics

Which dimensions should I be looking for if I wanted to upgrade the drive? I was being cheap when I got 500GB instead of 750GB -- mostly because I have the 1.5TB. I'm just tired of being wired and attached all the time.

I think the bold part is pretty much self explanatory? You would need an internal 2.5" wide 9.5mm high HDD. I would stick with the 750 RPM drives as the 1TB are on the slow side.

You would think. Unless I concede that I'm not well versed in computer hardware, extra true with Mac. Figured it'd be safe to ask the question here. I prefer being absolutely wrong instead of just unsure.

Regardless, I'm assuming it's in my best interest to stick with the external drive at this point. If the technology isn't there yet for a 1TB HDD, I don't want to force the issue.

Yea just stick with externals. I use a 2 tb hitachi with my MacBook Air. It's pocket size and works great.

Samsung makes a 9.5mm 2.5" 1TB internal drive that WILL fit into your MBP.

Just Google.

FTR, some external drives actually do have 2.5-inch drives inside. Case in point - one of those On-The-Go drives I bought from OWC a couple years ago...
