Last night, my macbook pro (3,1) screen went zebra stripes and froze for about 2 seconds, then this screen popped up. I used the power button to restart, and the computer rebooted then this screen popped up again about 5 seconds later. Now when i restart, it goes directly to this screen. The pinwheel freezes on every occassion, and nothing else is functional.

Anybody ever see this? In 12 years of using macs I've never seen this before. I'm thinking it's fried:'(

What you're seeing a known as a "Kernel Panic" (or KP, for short). It happens when the operating system itself has crashed. It can happen for any number of reasons, but in many cases, is as the result of a hardware failure of some sort.

The first thing you should do is run the Apple Hardware Test as described here:

Intel-based Macs: Using Apple Hardware Test

And report back on the findings.

Thanks for the response cwa!

Here's what I got, I did both the extended check and the basic check. Basic check stated a video problem.

There's a special extension for that defect. Assuming he's within the time-period, he should be good.
