So got this from OWC: 320.0GB Toshiba 7200RPM 9.5MM SuperSlim SATA Notebook Drive with 16MB Data buffer Toshiba MK3256GSY 320.0GB 7200RPM 9.5MM SuperSlim... in stock at OWC

I put it in and at start-up, it only shows a white screen and blinking (what it looks like a hard drive image) and a question mark. Is it not compatible?

I JUST got the old May 07 white MacBook from a friend and wanted to upgrade the HD. Thanks

That message just shows that the disk has no OSX on it to boot from

Have you got the original DVD disks that came with the mac, or an OS upgrade disk.

Or even an external enclosure so that you can connect the old drive to the uSB ports.

No I have none of that. It did not occur to me that when I change HD, I have to reinstall the OS... Lol

I was planning on upgrading to Lion or the Leopard since some recommended doing that. Can I just pick up those OS from Apple store and just install? (like what you'd do with Windows) or will I still need the OSX.

What are some options available to me?

You can buy Snow Leopard direct from Apple for $29.99. With a machine that old, I recommend leaving it with Snow Leopard as Lion needs more resources to run adequately. Lion can only be purchased from the Mac App store and you must be using Snow Leopard 10.6.8 before you can access the App store.

I still need the OSX to upgrade to Leopard. How can I go about getting the OSX on this fresh HD? My buddy didnt give me any CDs with the Mac.

Your best bet is Snow leopard - which should still cost $30 or below on ebay.

Leopard is the version before, and for some reason the install disks are still in high demand which means you would expect to pay $70 - $100 for a Leopard disk.

Also make sure you dont buy any grey restore disks on ebay, make sure its a retail copy of Snow Leopard, which had a picture of a Snow leopard on it

Seriously? The older version is just about double the price of the newer version? That makes no sense at all!

Not really

Leopard was sold at (I think) $129 when released

Snow leopard was sold for $29, to get as many Mac users as possible to upgrade, that's a good thing

Oh ok that makes sense I suppose, even though even at 50% it's initial selling price is still 30 dollars more then a newer version lol. I bought my Mac Leopard on it so I never had to buy the actual CD.
