hey folks....

I need a hero who speaks "problem reports".

It would REALLY APPRECIATE if one of you experts could glance over this and tell me what you think might be causing the freezing and forced restarts!

Fresh 10.5.4 - can you tell us if it's a new hard drive? Did you format it before installing OS X? Is it a Black retail version install DVD?

I see msdos file system refs there that I wouldn't expect.

Have you tried re-seating your current ram? Ram that is slightly out of place, or just dirty, is the cause for quite a few kernel panics.

No, not a fresh harddrive but I check drives often with disk utility, it seems fine... The installing of the "10.5.8 Combo Update" COMPLETELY crashed the computer, forcing ANOTHER formatting and fresh install of 10.5.4!

OH... NO idea why there would be MS-DOS stuff! The drives are all formatted Mac os extended, journalled, apple partition map.

Yeah, I reseated the RAM and found a dodgy 256MB chip using ramtest. I binned it, leaving me with 2 healthy 512 chips. It is happening a lot less but HAS happened once since removing the 256 chip... Hopefully that was a one-off and could be cured by getting a bit more RAM??

I'll try a brand new hard drive too. THANKS GUYS!!!
I'll help an old lady across the street soon to balance the karma ;-)

I would also try the Leopard combo update, and when its finished do a permissions repair in Disk Utility

Since you have already done the RAM thing - I assume you have also tries disconnecting all unnecessary USB peripherals - then the combo update sometimes gives the system a good refresh, where the incremental updates sometimes dont

Thanks man but the installing of the "10.5.8 Combo Update" COMPLETELY crashed the computer, forcing ANOTHER formatting and fresh install of 10.5.4!

and yeah, it's not any USB peripherals, i of course removed everything other than standard keyboard and mighty mouse...
