Seriously, holding down D doesn't work. It just boots anyway. This is with both a bluetooth keyboard and a USB one (at least I could zap the pram with the USB). Stupid thing just hangs and the fans go wild. Of course, NOTHING in the logs.. and I can't run top to see what's actually going on.

This thing is about to just flat out go BACK to the apple store.

Check out this discussion in the Apple Support forums. LINK There's also several more you can look at. Let me know what you came up with.

My 2011 iMac came with Snow Leopard pre-installed (purchased in May before Lion was released) and I was told I could use my SL install disk to do the AHT even though I now have Lion installed.

Another reason for not liking what Apple has done with Lion. :(

I'd actually be happier had this thing come with Snow Leopard, at least then I'd have disks..

So on this thread. https://discussions.apple.com/message/16523735#16523735

I found this:

Do this (I'll try it when this job's done and let ya know):

1. Shut machne down.

2. Press and hold OPTION and "D".

3. Press power - keep holding option+d

AHT will download and run.

Enjoy

Thanks Mike. That'll help those who are in the same boat.

Good tip.

Yep, that worked. In short, Apple's documentation is WRONG!!!!

I'd log into ADC and write a defect, but past history has shown that it's largely ignored anyway.

Nothing like having to lug an iMac back to the Apple store. :Angry-Tongue:

I believe it'll be going back. My wife had no end of difficulty getting migration assistant to work over FW 800 using TDM. One of the issues I had was drives randomly disconnecting from the system... guess what port those drives were on... I suspect my SMC is DOA on this iMac.

Yep, we have an appointment to bring it in and replace it tomorrow.

Apple DOA'd the iMac yesterday. There's a brand spankin' new one on the desk now.

Things I noticed:
The RAM removed MUCH easier on the new one. It also seated easier, and more fully into the case (not sure what that means, it could simply be that the old logic boards position was slightly (we're talking maybe .5 - 1 mm) lower in the assembly.. and that the pins were stiffer on the old one).

The RAM brand is not Samsung or Nanya (I don't recall the name, nor did I recognize it.. At some point I'll power down, pull it and check it again).

The lower case cover FIT better, and so did the phillips heads

Great. Chalk up another for Apple service, although lugging a 21.5" iMac back to the store can't be much fun. :)

It's lighter than a 2u rack box at least ;)

There were several others being swapped when I was there. A couple that we 'marginal' in the need to do so.. chalk those up to 'customer sat', which is really an awesome thing.
