Connecting to TV/Monitor

I'm trying to connect a MBA (11") to a Samsung TV/Monitor using a mini-display port to vga cable. All I get on the monitor is the MBA default "galaxy" desktop screen even though I have a different desktop display on the MBA. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
