GMAIL within Mac Inbox and 'On My Mac' Inbox...why both?

Using my MacBook Pro, Mail program: I use gmail with IMAP (Mac defaults to this) and I get my gmail messages in both my 'MAILBOXES' Gmail Inbox AND my 'ON MY MAC' Gmail Inbox.

I'm ok with that, but when I delete a message from one, I also need to delete from the other. Any reason these don't sync with each other?
