audio input 13" white MacBook

I'm unable to play music from an iPod, radio, etc. through the internal speakers on my 13" white MacBook. I'm using a male to male stereo cable with the correct size mini plugs, and am plugged into the audio in port. I can see the active input level changing on the sound preferences menu as music plays, but there's no sound. Music from iTunes plays just fine. Any thoughts? Thanks.
