Files disappear from search results after opened and then closed

I would like to be able to go back to a file in a Spotlight search box that I have already opened, looked at, and closed. But as soon as I close it, the file disappears from the search results. I have checked everywhere in the list, it's not moving it, it's REmoving it. Can anyone please tell me how to leave the file in the search results?
