MacBook: Unique (?) CD/DVD Drive Problem

My Macbook will read/mount commercial CDs and DVDs, but will not read/mount previously burned CDs/DVDs, nor will accept blank CDs when attempting to burn a playlist within iTunes.

I reset the PRAM: the problem still exists.

I would appreciate any thoughts on how to repair this problem -
