• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

Is 'burn' a particular app? Are you just using Finder? Disk Utility? iDVD?

If your want to burn the disc as a DVD video disc (i.e. one that can be played on a standalone DVD player) you have to convert to MPEG2, it's the DVD standard. Whether you will lose any quality very much depends on the quality of the source material and the encoding settings used.

If you are just copying the video file onto disc to play on another Mac/PC or to store it for posterity then you can just copy the file 'as is' providing it fits.

I believe the OP is using the App 'Burn"

And burn does this on the fly. Converts video then does the burn thing. Its a great App for burning, easy to use interface.

Cheers

You can't. A standard DVD *MUST* use MPEG-2 as its video format, and nearly anything you've shot or edited isn't in MPEG-2 format so it MUST be converted.

If I am simply putting data onto disc for posterity should I burn using a burn folder rather than an application? I know I will be unable to watch this unless putting it into another computer. Burning this way will not cause any quality loss, right?

Yes, as you say, burning files as data does not introduce any compression, and thus no quality loss.
