Apple News

It was reported this week that Apple's television commercial for the Power Mac G5 has been banned in the UK by advertising watchdogs for claiming it is "the world's fastest, most powerful personal computer." The Independent Television Commission (ITC) called the ad "misleading" and banned it from being broadcast after eight viewers contacted them to complain that the claim was based on the results of limited testing. In its advertising complaints report, the ITC ruled: "There was insufficient evidence to support the claim 'world's fastest, most powerful personal computer.' Furthermore, it shared one viewer's doubt that the claim could be substantiated at all because, as evidence for and against the claim had shown, computers were constantly being updated and had many different applications and benchmarks." It concluded that "the advertising was misleading and should not be re-shown in its current form."

Apple said that it will be opening five "Apple Stores within a store" in Australian retail chains before Christmas. According to Australian IT, the new stores within David Jones will be Apple branded and staffed by trained Apple employees, and will open in Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and the Gold Coast on December 1, 2003. A pilot of the "store within a store" concept has been running at the David Jones Sydney Elizabeth Street store since May this year. Apple Australia marketing director Arno Lenior declined to comment on sales figures but said the initiative had "exceeded expectations."

Apple said Wednesday that the iPod is now available to order through all 165 Virgin Megastore and Virgin Xpress retail locations in the UK. "We're thrilled to be working with Virgin Retail to bring the iPod to even more customers," said Mark Rogers, Apple's sales director and general manager for the UK and Ireland.

Apple is now offering two promotions for Final Cut Pro 4 and DVD Studio Pro 2. Now through February 28, 2004, you can buy any Mac and save $300 when you purchase Final Cut Pro 4 and DVD Studio Pro 2 at the same time. Or you can save $150 if you purchase Final Cut Pro 4 and DVD Studio Pro 2 without a Mac. The offers are available only at participating Apple Authorized Resellers and require a mail-in rebate from Apple's Web site.

Apple began airing a new iPod/iTunes television commercial Thursday tonight featuring a remix of "Rock Star" by N.E.R.D. Like the previous ads, the new spot features silhouetted people with iPods dancing in front of vibrant background colors. The new ad was seen during primetime on NBC.

Apple also launched a new Web site, iPodRocks.com, to promote the iPod for the holiday season. The new site seems to be aimed at teenagers, offering the following sections: "What's an iPod?" "How does it work?" "Convince your parents" and "Where to buy."
