I have 2 different IPODs & neither holds their charge. I can turn them off fully charged, but when I decide to use them they are dead! Why?

The batteries are most likely at the end of thier cycle. How old are they?
A lot depends on how they have been treated (in terms of charging) over the years.
I have a 5th gen iPod that still gives 12 hours playback.

batteries

One was given to me used so don't know how old it is. The other is probably like 5 years old. So is it possible to replace the batteries?

Yes, it's not too hard to do yourself, or there are companies that will do it for you.
Have a google around.
