I have a 2007? iMac 24" aluminium, the first models.

Recently the HD has been whirring and the odd click, but to me, it sounded like the heads were shot.

So I bought a new 1TB drive, cloned the dying HD to it, took out the dying HD, and replaced with the new one (which worked perfectly by USB).

But, on trying to boot up, the new HD is making whirring noises pretty much the same as the old one. I've checked the old drive in a USB enclosure, and it is faulty.

But why is my new drive making the same sound as the old one, when 30 minutes earlier, it was working fine in a USB enclosure?

I've now got a dead iMac, just grey screen when I turn it on. Could it be the logic board??

Any help appreciated.

In the meantime, I'll remove the new HD, and test it in an enclose kit.

That's the best course of action right now. First confirm that drive is not faulty. While rare, some drives do actually fail right out of the box. :|

iMacs are not the easiest things to work inside. Any chance the cable has been damaged during the two exchanges?

I took out the new drive, tested it in an enclosure kit, and it is faulty too!

Unbelievable that my main drive and backup have given up the ghost at the same time!!

Fortunately, I have most of my stuff backed on other drives, but have lost December work. Could have been worse I guess.

Have just ordered a new 1TB drive, will try this one!

Like MacDude121 stated.... it's rare but does happen. I've gotten brand new hard drives right out of the box that were DOA. Which is one reason I like to buy hard drives locally so I can return them without paying shipping and having to wait on a new one. No hassle.

This is going from bad to worse!!

Bought a used Seagate ST31000524AS today, tried to install it, and it doesn't have a little slot for the heat sensor to go into! :( So I guess if I install it it's gonna overheat.

But OK, I'll use it as my backup drive, and will have to go and buy another after New Year.

Anyone recommend a reliable drive? 2007 Intel Aluminium iMac 24" (first model)

What brand was the 1TB that failed?

I put a 1TB WD Caviar Black into my friends 24" iMac like yours and it's working great almost a year later.
