I have a old iBook G/3. 500mhz with 384 mb memory, I just wiped it and installed the original Mac OS 9.1....now I want to update the software to OSX but I can't remember which to use now....I have panther and the one after that (can't remember the name since it's been so long)
Also would like to know if I can't go straight to 10.4.11 or if I have to go in order ??
Also I did the Internet setup and see my wireless on there but it won't connect

Any help would be appreciated !

Thanks

OS 10.3 would probably be best...but OS 10.4 (Tiger) will run on it.

No you don't have to install the OS 's in order...as long as the 10.4 install disk isn't an "update" disk (these do require a previous OS version to be installed).

If OS 10.4 is what you want to install...just stick the install disk in...and go for it!:)

Not sure about this...but consider that the issue could be with your router settings (not just the iBook)...unless other computers in your home have no issues connecting.

Also consider that a 500mhz iBook will be using the wireless "b" protocol only. So if your router is not broadcasting a wireless "b" compatible signal...then your iBook won't "see" anything.

A G3 will only be able to connect via WEP. Will not connect with the much more secure WPA encryption.

You have Mac OS 9 on your iBook right now correct? First, you should look into upgrading to OS X 10.3 or 10.4 before worrying about the internet issue, as working from OS 9 can be a headache.

If you have a Black retail disk of both 10.3 and 10.4, you can choose which you want to install.

OS X 10.3 "Panther" = Faster Performance overall.

OS X 10.4 "Tiger" = Slower Performance, but more outdated software and apps.

:)

EXCELLENT reminder "MacDude121"...nice job!:)

@Socalfem...like MacDude121 reminded us...if you currently have OS 9.1 installed on your G3 iBook...OS 9 really doesn't play real well with wireless networks (in my experience). Like MacDude121 also suggested...install OS X (10.3 or 10.4)...then lets talk about wireless connectivity if you're still having issues.
