The iPad connects to a WiFi access point, if your Mac behaves like an access point, then the iPad will connect to it, short of that it won't..

How does one know if the computer can behave as an access point? I have the new 27" iMac with OS7 (Lion).

Your computer can create a wireless network.

It's in your wireless menu, next to the bluetooth logo on the upper right of your screen.

Let's step back a second here.

First of all, do you have a wireless network in your house presently?

Second, is your iPad running the latest version of iOS (iOS 5 or higher)?

Then could you clarify what it is EXACTLY that you actually want to do? What is the end goal here?

I was wondering if I could connect to my iPad to the computer by wifi rather having to connect with the cable.

If you are running iOS 5 on the iPad and the latest version of iTunes on your computer, then the answer is yes. Open iTunes and you will see the iPad appear in the devices and do its sync thing without being connected by a cable.
