Can't run gedit

Hi, I just downloaded the gedit .dmg package from gnome, and installed it into my 'Applications' folder

double clicking on the application icon in 'Applications' doesn't launch gedit

if i try to run gedit in terminal (by typing "gedit" as the command), I get this:

"-bash: gedit: command not found"
