my 15" 2.4 MBP has this issue where the computer starts ( I can hear the fan turn on and the DVD drive make noise. However, it turns off after 5 seconds. There is no boot chime.

I have:
-applied new coat of silicone/ grease to the processor
-changed out for a known working hard drive
-changed out a known working top case

your input is appreciated

The no boot chime usually indicates a logic board problem. Open it up again and double check the work you did. Why did you have to re-apply thermal paste to the CPU heat sink?

It was doing it previously. I read that a possible issue is was the thermal paste. so I reapplied new paste and have the same problem.

You did use real heat sink compound, right? Not just any ordinary paste will work and could potentially act as an insulator. Also, EASY DOES it on the compound - you really want a razor-thin layer, any more than that will also have an insulating effect.

Yes, I used heat sink compound. I dont think it would have heated up and crashed within 5 seconds.

Probably not, but an over application or an accidental drip could certainly cause a short. If it were mine, I'd be pulling it back apart and double-checking my work.
