time machine wont open

when i click on the time machine icon in my dock nothing happens, it lets me enter into preferences but it wont let me go back into previous saves to restore them.any ideas would be helpful.
its a 21" IMac running Lion.

what if you click on the tool bar icon and the click on "Enter Time Machine" ?

nope wont let me enter. just got off the phone with applecare they had my reformat the harddrive, hopefully this will take care of it.
