epson v500 or v600 scanner

My winter project will be to scan 30 years worth of slides/pictures into my iPhoto. I was wondering which scanner would be good to do this with. The two epson's seem to have good reviews. I am not too much of a geek so would appreciate any info on the best way or best hardware to use to do this. Thanks
