iBook g4 minimum install

I have an old iBook g4 running 10.4.11. It is very slow indeed.
I would like to use it for the sole purpose of browsing the Internet.
I am hoping that by installing only what is required for this task, the machine will be a bit faster at least. What should I install, and how do I do this?
I have the install discs (gray) and repair discs (also gray).
Any suggestions appreciated, Thankyou.

Are the discs the original install discs from the iBook? If so they will not be 10.4.11, and so doing a clean install will give you 10.2 (Jaguar) or 10.3 (Panther) at most by my reckoning.
That would make the machine smoother and faster anyway, as Tiger is pushing it on an iBook unless you have a max amount of ram installed.
You don't say how much ram and what processor speed you have either, so it's difficult to advise fully, but as a general rule, you shouldn't have any issue with web browsing anyway, just with flash heavy sites (which you won't solve anyway).
A bit more detail will help though.

We need more info. What ibook is this? CPU type and speed? RAM?

Kevin, the iBook 2005 last generation before Intel came with 10.4.2 and ran FAST as can be. I know because I bought it brand new!

Only thing about Tiger it's it's getting old and some sites are not going to work well with older Safari and you can not upgrade any farther than what 10.4.11 give you.

I am running 10.5.8 with the RAM maxed out. A little slow here and there but still very useable for what I do on a notebook.

Please tell us what iBook you have so we can better help. The last one I own was a 1.33 Ghz G4 and came stock with 512Megs. You can upgrade to 1.5 GB RAM. Made a large difference with 10.5 here.

You need more ram, 256MB is not enough even for minimal tasks.

Agreed, max out the ram and it will run Tiger (10.4) just fine, though the 800 processor is at it's limit.
I you really want to downgrade the OS, then go no lower than 10.3.

Thanks i will take your advice and increase the RAM. As for the processor, can that be increased?
