Help needed connect my macbook pro to my tv!

I want to hook up my macbook pro to my tv so i bought the mini display port to HDMI adapter and an hdmi cord but when i plug it in my computer is using the TV as a dual screen. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Command + 1 should toggle the display from mirroring.

command + 1 isnt doing anything but making me to my home page. and when i do it when everything is closed it does nothing. any other suggestions?

Or System Preferences - Displays - Appearance tab - uncheck Mirror displays
