a standard MBP, do i have the tools to edit a DVD Video ?

Hi all, i continue to be amazed at the Free software that came with Lion, however i have just played a Home Movie from an Analogue Sony CamCorder into a Panasonic DVD Recorder (the type that is plugged into the TV) and recorded a 1.5 minute long Video, that my daughter wants to send off to the ITV for inclusion into a Video Competition "Animals do the Funniest things" !

I now have on this DVD Video Disc a couple folders with folders in VIDEO_RM and VIDEO_TS, both containing files, i can play this Video on my Mac Book Pro without any trouble, but i would like to EDIT it a little, just shorten it a little and cut some bits out in a few places.

So my question is this:- do i have the Software on my Mac Book Pro to be able to EDIT the Video ????

Yes and No.

The No first. To get footage off your HOME MADE(capitals for the Moderators!) you can use Handbrake which will turn the whole thing into a video file.

Or, you can use MPEGStreamclip to convert the .vob files that are in the Video_TS folder. Export to Quicktime using the Apple Intermediate Codec setting.

You can then use iMovie to edit your video.

ok friend, i easily got Handbrake working, this converted it to a MP4 file.

I then started up iMovie to try and CROP it, what i wanted to do was to cut out a few sections from the ends and the middle.

I then found, by my reckoning anyway, that iMovie cannot actually shorten a Movie it can only make the frames smaller !.

If this isn't in fact the case, i have found the Help file sadly lacking in information.

Not totally sure I understand what you want to do and not an iMovie expert by any means. But, if I understand what you want to do, you start with the basic clip and then drag the portions that you want up to the project screen. ie Instead of cutting out segments, you take the cut segments and assemble them together, if this makes sense or is appropriate to what you are trying to do.

FWIW (many have argued with me on this) but I do not find iMovie to be either intuitive or particularly user friendly. A good reference that I have found is David Pogues' Missing Manual for iMovie

Yes it can.

Import your movie using iMovie's File Menu; File>Import>Movies>your movie. It will then appear in iMovie's Event Library. Select File>New Project to star a project.Click on your movie in the Event Library, and a small yellow box will appear. Drag the ends of that box so that it contains the part of the movie that you want. Then drag that to your Project. Do the same for all the bits of your movie that you want.
