MBP- Shuts Down rather than Safe Sleep

I have a 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo MBP for a couple years now. Over the last few months (and becoming more frequent), the unit shuts itself down when the battery runs low rather than going into safe sleep.

I've reset the SMC, check prefs, etc.

I know the battery could use replacing, but I'm trying to figure out if this is a symptom of the battery or the logic board. To me, the logic board makes more sense- however since it didn't do this before, could it just be the battery.

I'm asking first as I'm dreading waiting in line at the genius bar this time of year- even with an appointment.

Any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Changing out the battery is a lot less expensive than a new logic board and that's something you can do yourself. If the new battery doesn't work, then you can decide if you want to go further in repairing it.

I suppose that is the "No Duh" solution, but sometimes I need someone to put thing into perspective for me. Thanks!
