battery life

got a brand new macbook pro i7 and getting about 2 1/2 hours battery life is this standard ? downloading constantly and just general use

Battery life on laptops vary greatly based on use. Apple says up to 8 hours of use on a single charge, but that's 8 hours with a * somewhere indicating what you could/should be doing to get those 8 hours..you're not going to get 8 hours while running some games or other CPU intensive applications..

My gut feeling is that you should be getting more than 2.5 hours, but others with MBP's should chime in soon enough with what they are getting and that will tell you whether a visit to your local Apple store is warranted..

That's about what I see with my

2010 MB Pro 15". If I am actually using it. Much less if I am watching a movie, much more if it is simply sleeping with the lid down. My Air does better.

Mines gets a few hours. Maybe around 5 or so? MBP 13". No downloads.
I use Aperture, and make backups and watch youtube/go online.
Stuff like that. iTunes.
