MacBook not logging out properly

Strange problem: I logged out and shut down last night. This morning I pressed the power button and my MacBook Air 13" running Lion started straight up - into my Home folder, not asking me to log in at all.

Is this a known issue, and is there a cure?

Your Mac's Specs
2017 27" iMac, 10.5" iPad Pro, iPhone 8, iPhone 11, iPhone 12 Mini, Numerous iPods, Monterey
System Preferences, General. Remove the check from the box that says:

"Restore windows when quitting............."
