Ok so i have a 2011 mbp.

It will randomly heat up quite a bit, not sure why, not very many programs running and not much is showing in activity monitor.

Will even do this during sleep mode. Fans will kick on very high for about 1-2 minutes and then go back to normal.

Any ideas on why its doing this?

Try getting some real info, download a heat monitor like istatpro. Everything below 93 degrees is quite normal.
I've been surfing the web for overheating of macbook pro's a few weeks ago. Every question about macbook pro overheating is answered with; if it doesn't shutdown on its own, your mac is just fine.

Il will check it out once it does it again.

Just seems odd to randomly heat up like that, i could understand if it was under heavy usage.

The only thing odd about it is the fact that it's doing it while sleeping. Even web browsers somtimes use GPU acceleration and can generate a great deal of load at times.
