I just bought a used Macbook, It came out in late 2007. I know very little about Mac's and don't know witch version of OP to get or best place to get it.
Right now it has Linux ubuntu on it. Is Mac OS free like linux or do I have to buy it. No software came with it. I don't want to spend a lot on software if I don't have to. I'm looking forward to learning Mac if I can get the software.

The Mac OS is not free. I would suggest purchasing Mac OS 10.6 or 10.7. 10.6 is on a disk ($29)...10.7 can be purchased on a USB stick ($69):

Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.)
OS X Lion USB Thumb Drive - Apple Store (U.S.)

FYI...OS 10.7.2 is the latest version.

Your best option, given that you have an Intel machine, is to buy Snow Leopard from Apple ($29) and install that.
The software is certainly not free like Linux, but this is very cheap for a full OS, and will be very easy to learn once installed.
The only forseeable problem is the current format of the HD.

Edit! Nick beat me to it!
