ClickToFlash will play the HTML5 version as well if it's available. Alternatively, if you opt-in to the HTML5 beta, you obviate the need for an extension.

Ahhh… I was not aware of that. I assume that the opt-in process requires a registration of some sort with YouTube, which is something I for one have no need for or interest in doing. Still… options are good.

Lifeisabeach thanks! I'll try those ... shall I first uninstall flash then?

It's not necessary to do so, although I did after posting earlier as an experiment for a bit to see if I'll ever miss it.

van smith how do i opt in to the html5 beta?
Go here to opt-in. Note that support differs across browsers. Since videos are served up as either H.264 or WebM videos, your browser may or may not make use of the HTML5 player.

Good point about WebM that I forgot about. Is there a plug-in available for Safari to support WebM?

Perian has support so I imagine that will add it to Safari (which I think uses QT to playback content served through HTML5 video tags). I'll have to test this.

Take a look here - there's more info on compatible players here.

EDIT: Just did a test and I was right - Perian's support of WebM allows me to play WebM content in Safari:

That's entirely irrelevant to this discussion since we're talking about one site who happens to serve up a majority of their content in WebM format as well (source). Regardless, how does such a statistic eliminate the value of a WebM plugin?

Guys thank you! Problem solved. I did the vertical forest plugin option. It's great! Thanks!
