Upgrading Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard to Lion

I know i have to get 10.6 Snow Leopard in order to get the 29.99 dollars appstore Lion upgrade but what version of Snow Leopard do I need? I have a 2007 MacBook White Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM, running Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. Thanks

Purchase any version of Snow Leopard...and it will work fine. Then update it to the latest version via "Software Update".

Um, you need 10.6.7 to get the App Store. So, buy any 10.6, do the upgrade to at least 10.6.7 as suggested, then you're good to go to Lion.

Rereading my earlier post...it could seem a bit unclear...what I meant was:

- buy any version of Snow Leopard
- update to the latest version of Snow Leopard via "Software Update"
- then purchase & install 10.7 Lion

If I completely wiped my hard drive clean and didn't care about data could i just get Lion on a flashdrive and boot it up installing it that way, bypassing leopard?

I think that you mean bypassing "Snow Leopard"...but yes...if you purchase Lion (10.7) on the USB stick you can just install Lion without purchasing & installing Snow Leopard (10.6) first.

Can you boot from a external hard drive?

Depends what is on the external drive, but yes if there is a cloned operating system that has been made bootable.

Just came across this, I'm in the same position - currently with OSX 10.5.8, and with mac since 2007 (imac and macbook pro).

A few questions:

1. I'm just using mac for 5 main usages a) Logic 7 b) Web c) Pics / Video d) documents e) music playback / mp3. I really need to keep most files as they are audio files for songs etc. Would I benefit by upgrading to Lion?

2. If so, what would be the best route to do it? (I've never upgraded before) Do I have to save everything on another drive? Or do I just upgrade without removing files?

I'm still using 10.5.8 as well. Everything works. That's good enough for me. When I'm no longer able to do something I want to do, it's time for a new Mac. The latest OS will come with it. I've never paid for a new OS to put on an older Mac.

I have no plans to upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion. I don't see the benefit. Snow Leopard seems to work perfect, haven't encountered any bugs in 2 years except when I installed a Microsoft product on it. Unless the newer OS does something you need that the old one doesn't and your mac has enough power, it seems like a waste of time and money.

I wouldn't call it a waste of money -- it's $30 ffs -- but if everything's working great for you and you don't think any of the new features in Lion would benefit you enough to upgrade, then don't. It's your computer and your choice.
