Have been reading around the web for an answer. My backups don't seem that much faster than USB 2.0. Anyone have any suggestions? I have no anti virus running. What else can I check?

You're not going to get much help without telling us which Mac you have, year, model, and what version of OS X it's running. And.. are you using Time Machine for backing up?

I have a triple interface external hard drive (USB, FW400, FW800) and can tell you positively that backing up a 500 GB hard drive with FW800 is much faster than USB 2.0. (Time Machine)

With that nice new fast machine and FW 800 your backup time should be considerable faster than doing it with USB 2. Have you checked to see if you have anything else running in the background while doing the TM backup? Keep your Activity Monitor.app open the next time you do a backup.

Also, have you run Disk Utility to check the drive for errors? Sometimes, relatively minor errors in directory structure can really slow down anything that writes to the drive.
