Camera zoom does not work

I have a anew iphone 4 and I read that if you touch the screen near the bottom a slider that controls the zoom lens appears This does not happen. I tried it on my wife's earlier model and it works fine.

Any ideas?

I think you have to drag your thumb and forefinger towards opposite ends of the screen and the slider will appear.

If you just touch the bottom it will lock the Auto Exposure and Focus.
