I trashed the application as well as the profile and preferences in library and it still will not let me empty the trash - keep saying thunderbird is in use - any suggestions to get rid of this??? I want Mac Mail to be my default but everytime i click on something like for instance Craigslist where I click to respond to an add, it pulls up Thunderbird

Way... way too many specs to list.
Yea, you can....

Click on the Apple, click on force quit, highlight thunderbird in there.. and click on the force quit button.

If that doesn't work, reboot, then empty trash.

Then reboot. It'll stop whatever process is using whatever file is in your trash. (or should). If not, we'll come up with a less elegant way of dealing with it.
