macbook start up problems

I woke up this morning and my computer was acting very odd and still is. whatever I typed came up as symbols. when I restarted my computer I saw Mac hard drive with an arrow below it. I clicked on it and now everything seems to be acting odd. clicking on stuff will attempt to save it, everything is still in symbols when I type and programs when I click on them will hide. I am totally confuses
